Eczema

What is Eczema?

Eczema or atopic dermatitis is a skin condition that makes the skin red, itchy, and inflamed. Over time eczema disrupts the skin barrier, making that area of skin more susceptible to infections and dryness. Eczema is most common in children but can happen to anyone; eczema alone affects more than fifteen million Americans.

Eczema is most common in families that have histories of allergies, asthma, or respiratory problems.

What Are The Causes of Eczema?

Genetics can be a big contribution to having eczema as it is more likely in individuals with family with history of dermatitis, allergies or any respiratory issues

  • Your immune system - if your immune system tends to overreact to any tiny allergens or irritants your skin can be inflamed easily

  • The environment- dry air, smoke, skin products, harsh soaps and towels, and pollen are all outside factors that can contribute to your eczema

Often stress can cause eczema as the influx of hormones can cause the skin to overreact

What Are The Symptoms of Eczema?

  • Dry, itchy, and inflamed skin

  • Rashes or bumps on the skin, on the hands, ankles, wrists, eyelids, and inside the bends of elbows and knees

  • Some bumps may leak fluid

  • Scaly leather-like patches of skin

Think You Are Suffering From Eczema?

Your health provider can often identify eczema by looking at the classic signs which can be red itchy scaly skin. If further examination is needed an allergy or blood test may be performed.

Treatment/Prevention:

  • Moisturize your skin often

  • Use a humidifier if dry air is causing your eczema

  • Avoid any harsh soaps or skin products that contain irritants such as fragrances or any chemicals

  • Topical ointments such as cortisone cream (over the counter steroid) are recommended to apply on the skin

  • Avoid long and hot showers
