What are STDs?


Sexually transmitted diseases are illnesses that are caused and spread through any sexual activity involving vaginal, oral, and anal sex, and are transmitted from person to person. STDs are serious conditions that without immediate treatment can be life-threatening.


Some Types of STDs Include:

  • Genital herpes- a common STD that infects the genitals and mouth area causing blistery sores, with no cure but treatable symptoms

  • HIV/AIDS- HIV is an infection that breaks down your immune system and can lead to AIDS if not treated, however there is no cure for this disease but can be maintained

  • Genital warts- growth around the anus area and caused by HPV

  • Hepatitis B- a virus that can cause liver disease and spread through sex and hygiene problems such as sharing toothbrushes

  • Chlamydia- very common STD caused by a bacterial infection and is easy to treat

  • Syphilis- common bacterial infection and can be cured by medicine but can lead to complications if not treated

  • Gonorrhea- a common STD caused by a bacterial infection and is easy to treat

  • Vaginitis- inflammation of the vagina caused by a bacterial infection

  • HPV- a super common STD that is usually harmless and goes away on its own however some types of HPV can lead to cancer


What Causes STDs?

STDs are caused by various bacteria that infect your body and are spread through sexual activity involving the mouth, vagina, penis, or anus. Some STDs can be passed through blood such as sharing drug needles.


What Are Some Symptoms Of STDs?

  • Bumps, sores or warts on or near the penis, vagina, mouth or anus

  • Vaginal discharge with a bad odor causing irritation and more discharge than normal

  • Vaginal bleeding

  • Painful sex

  • Rashes on skin

  • Painful urination

  • Night sweats, fevers, chills

Treatment/Prevention:

  • Antibiotics can treat many STDs that are not incurable, such as gonorrhea and syphilis

  • Practicing safe sex is the key to prevent these diseases, such as using condoms, and limiting your sexual partners

  • STDs such as HIV cannot be cured but daily treatment and medication can help you maintain a healthy life
